While this is a long ride, it is stunning with myriad options to take frequent breaks if needed! This route is also easy for those of you whose directional skills are not your strong suit; you simply follow the blue waters of the sea.
In the first hour, you will have ample space for biking along the beach. You won’t be the only adventurer biking, but there is plenty of room for everyone.
Exploring Costa Brava: Barcelona to Calella Bike Ride
Sant Adria
Your first stop: El Bésos River. Have you ever seen pictures from the Blue Lagoon in Iceland? Look closely as you approach this river and you will see this magnificent blue color flowing into the river.
Take the bridge over the river, but stop there too! There you may be lucky and see hundreds of gorgeous fish!
Besos River
This bike trip continues to be simple, as you just ride along the picturesque coastline, which boasts hundreds of beaches. There are many cafes along the way for you to quench your thirst.
It is recommended that you hold off until you are outside the city, as the cafes have a more local and authentic vibe than the touristy spots near Barcelona.
Break at Ocata Beach
If it is sunny, stop at El Masnou and grab a beer or water at Guingueta Bambù–Ocata, a café on the beach. As you wind forward away from the city, look for the familiar W hotel structure in the distance and you can see how far you’ve come.
Take lots of pictures as you go further up into the mountains and admire the cliffside views and rocky natural beaches from your Barcelona bike.
Cycle right at the water towards Premia
Do not worry about being stranded, having a flat tire or needing to end your journey short for whatever reason. The historic train line, which is the oldest in Spain, runs parallel to your Barcelona bike trail. No matter what, you can’t get stranded.
Follow the train tracks
At some point, you will need to re-energize before you continue onward. Check out Bar de Tapas Casa Pepe and gorge on some tasty tapas. This requires biking uphill, but it is worth the effort for their fresh fare and unique twist on Patatas bravas.
After you are full and happy, bike easily downward and continue along the beach.
Stop for some Tapas
There are some twists and turns that require biking on the road. Be alert and careful in these sections, as you are biking with cars alongside you.
The last stretch of this Barcelona bike ride is the most challenging, but just take it slow and stop for breaks. You will not tire from the scenic views and rolling sea waves crashing into the rocks.
Splendid views at Sant Pol
If you are looking for a quiet, non-touristy destination to sleep for the night, check out Sant Pol de Mar, which is a small town 5km from Calella. There are not as many hotel options, however, if you can get a room, there is a quieter and less touristy feeling in this part of the Costa Brava.
Calella Beach
Once you reach the beach town of Calella, you are only a few minutes away from your destination. Hotel Garbi is one of the many hotels found in Calella. This is where we chose to stay, however, you can’t go wrong, especially off-season.
The prices drop and there is more availability. You can store your bikes on the luxurious balconies that overlook the sea.
View from Hotel Garbi
The hotel comes with a full dinner buffet and breakfast; therefore you don’t have to tire out your sore legs looking for places to eat. Upon your arrival, change into your bathing suit and soak in the hot tub to relieve your tense muscles.
Enjoy a drink at the bar terrace that features music every night. Fuel up at the buffet dinner, which caters to all your cravings.
After dinner, enjoy wine on the balcony before you rest comfortably for the night. If you have a boost of energy, simply walk around this vibrant seaside city and stop at one of the many cafes or bars.
Views over Calella Beach
The next morning, enjoy your seaside view one last time before packing up. Whether you are planning to take the convenient and fast train back or you plan on getting back on your Barcelona bike, the buffet breakfast is a must.
