Barcelona Reveals the Fall Foliage

Fall is the perfect time to visit Barcelona. The days are getting shorter, but the weather is still mild and pleasant. It’s the ideal time to enjoy a light jacket or scarf for walking around town or exploring a monument like Sagrada Familia.

Barcelona is the perfect time to visit during the fall for a few reasons. Fall means beautiful leaves, cool breezes, and interesting festivals. Octobers in Barcelona offers a variety of attractions that appeals to every type of traveler.

The weather in Barcelona in October gets colder, but it’s still pleasant, with highs in 21 Celsius and lows of 12 Celsius. There are plenty of museums and things to do that are open until October for tourists who need something new to experience before winter sets in.

This time of year’s most popular attractions include places like Sagrada Familia, a masterpiece designed by Catalonia architect Antonio Gaudi and partially unfinished at his death.

There’s nothing better than experiencing the changes of the season in nature. The transition from summer to fall is a perfect example of how change can happen almost overnight! The leaves on trees fall, as are flowers and grass, and colors fade into earth tones.

The Essentials for Visiting Barcelona in October

October is an amazing time in this city. The streets are filled with people in their costumes, especially in events, and the atmosphere is vibrant and colorful. I’m sure, like me, you want to come prepared with a few essentials so you can enjoy Barcelona to the fullest.

Here are my top 10 must-haves for Barcelona in October:

  • Smartphone – There’s no better way to take pictures (and videos) of your trip! You’ll be able to document all of your memories while they’re fresh on your mind. Plus, it’s easy to use apps like City Maps 2Go or Google Maps when you need directions or transportation information
  • Hat and a scarf – It can get cold sometimes when evening falls, so make sure you got these handy.
  • Camera – It’s always good to have a camera with you because you never know when something will happen!
  • Water bottle – There are plenty of places that sell these, so keep hydrated!
  • A copy of the map and notepad that your hotel/hostel provides.
  • Lip balm and sunscreen (no one wants to look like they just got off a super wild vacation because they got super tan or black)
  • Snacks – There’s nothing yummier than small snacks from local markets, like elote corn from La Boquería in Barcelona.
  • Umbrella – You’ll probably be outside a lot, so make sure you’re prepared for rain or sun!
  • Warm clothing – When the weather changes, it could be so quickly that you’ll want to have something to wrap up in.
  • A camera case – Keep your equipment safe with a camera case! It can also come in handy for keeping all sorts of things together and organized, like chargers, batteries, memory cards.
  • A light jacket – One that is cosier than a thin long-sleeved shirt just in case it gets chilly at night for walking back home from dinner after the sun goes down late into the evening hours of 10 pm-midnight. Consider these light jacket ideas to suit your travel style.

October in Barcelona: Top Things to Do

Day Trip to Montserrat

If you’re looking to visit the Montserrat basilica in a day, I recommend taking the 8:30 am bus out of Barcelona. It’s easy to find, and the ride is only about 1 hour and 35 minutes. One tip for your time there, know that it will be crowded, so bring a jacket just in case it gets chilly at the hilltop.

Montserrat Barcelona

The basilica is one of the most visited attractions in Catalonia and was previously an important religious center for those who followed Christianity before its construction. The monastery was renovated after being destroyed by Napoleon in 1794 as he invaded Catalonia with only around 600 residents living there (the people still maintain that date).

It is also possible to climb up or take a cable car up for the summit.

Travel by Bike

Riding a bike in Barcelona is an incredible experience for many reasons. For one, it’s cheap, and you can ride places that cars can’t go. It’s also an excellent way to see the city from street level without worrying about street congestion or difficulty parking your car.

You’ll have so much more time just to stroll around looking at street art and street markets if you ride everywhere! There are bike routes on almost every street in Barcelona, too, so no need to worry about traffic lights or stop signs!

The bike routes have been mapped out very well here in the city and with thousands of footmarks on them, making navigation easy enough for anyone who knows how to read map symbols.

Experience the Passion of a Flamenco Show

Passion Of A Flamenco Show

When someone visits Barcelona, they should experience the Flamenco Show. This is because it’s something that not everyone can see and experience in their lifetime. It’s a passionate performance that doesn’t equal any other art form out there, and many people say that this is the best show to see.

The Passion of a Flamenco Show has its roots in the Romani people (also known as Gypsies). They’ve lived in Spain for hundreds of years and have brought their culture with them everywhere they go. In Spain, these shows are typically performed on Sundays at night in taverns or hotels where locals go. The show usually features two performers: one male dancer, who sings and accompanies himself with a cast.

Oktoberfest Barcelona

The number of people that head to Oktoberfest every year is about 6 million. It’s an event that lasts for two weeks in October and takes place on the 2nd and 3rd weekends each month, so make sure you’re there when it starts! Here are four things that you’ll surely love in Oktoberfest Barcelona.

  • Beer – Oktoberfest happens during October. This means that you can expect to find beer being served at this festival! I recommend trying the “Mass” glass of beer, which is a litre of beer for about 6.00USD.
  • Free Entry – And it’s free, with no costs to enter and partake in all the festivities and food!
  • Taco Stand – The taco stand is actually located right next to the entrance, so when you walk in, just follow your nose, and I bet that you won’t be disappointed!
  • Entertainment – Besides taking part in drinking local beers from around Munich (including Spaten!), Some other forms of entertainment at Oktoberfest include the beer tent, the carnival, and live music.

Tips for October Travellers

To begin, I just want to say that October is one of my favorite times to travel because it has a mixture of everything: happy days when the weather is warm with sunny days and dark chilly nights.

So, whether you’re looking for an exceptional photo-taking opportunity or want to enjoy the Spanish culture away from busy Barcelona streets, October has you covered. Below are some tips on traveling around that will make your trip easier.

  • No matter whatever place you visit in Barcelona, pickpocketers prey on tourists, so it would be best to make the smart choices of keeping an eye on your things at all times. For extra precaution, try to bring your under-the-clothing pouch or crossbody with you for carrying your passport, money, and other important stuff. It’s also a wise move to leave some cash and cards back in the hotel just to keep it safe.
  • Make reservations. To make a reservation in advance, it’s best to Google “restaurants near me” and then search the area that you want to stay for tips on where to go. Locals often offer discounts or specials, so if you’re looking for more of a local experience, it would be best not to make the reservation at the hotel but instead find one through Yelp or TripAdvisor.
  • It is recommended to check the weather forecast before travelling to Barcelona in October because there can be a lot of rain. You will want to pack for any occasion, whether you need warmer clothes or rain protection.

There’s just so much to do in Barcelona in October! For those who love art or design, I recommend checking out the Picasso Museum or going for a stroll through La Rambla and Sagrada Familia during the day before heading off for an evening of Flamenco! If you’re more into nature, then definitely check out Parc Guell or take a bicycle ride through one of the many parks throughout Barcelona.

The city of Barcelona is a fun place to go when visiting Europe. With its many unique attractions and things to do, it’s easy to see why it has been continuously visited since the 15th century. I hope you find a thing or two that will be useful for your trip to Barcelona in October.
