Lluïsa Vidal (1876-1918)
Lluïsa Vidal is a Catalan painter whose work consists of various techniques and styles she has studied throughout her life.
Lluïsa Vidal is Catalan Modernism’s sole professional female painter and a contemporary of Picasso and Casas. In 1901, she was one of the few women of her day to travel to Paris to study painting. She was a talented Barcelona artist, but Vidal struggled to make her mark in an era when it was unimaginable for women to hold professional positions.
She returned to Barcelona in 1902, joined the feminist movement, and committed herself to portraiture, almost exclusively painting women. She died in Barcelona in 1904. Vidal faded into oblivion after her death. Due to the high caliber of her art, unscrupulous dealers took advantage of her reputation. They replaced the signatures on some of her greatest paintings with those of more valuable painters on the market.
However, art historians have conducted thorough examinations of her life and work in recent years, and attention is once again being paid to this key figure in Catalan Modernism. Some of her work is on display at the MNAC.
